The entire class appeared at the Beyond Hunger conference in Philadelphia and called out to me from across the room. The connection made in the short time of that interview had sticking power for these children (and for me), and so I can only imagine what it meant for them to see their stories published. Beyond this book, the Healthy NewsWorks student media program is important for many reasons—for the opportunity to practice critical thinking and communication skills and for the chance to visit new places and meet community leaders. It also sets a foundation for young people to take hold of their lives and their choices rather than having life happen to them. Eagles Youth Partnership is a sponsor of this work because it makes sense for all of the reasons I just shared. We have emerging leaders authoring this book. Some might be journalists and others will have stories written about them. All are entering the world with curiosity, navigating with questions, and looking for their true north. Let’s be sure we continue to shine brightly for them. Sarah Martinez-Helfman Executive Director, Eagles Youth Partnership Foreword Sarah Martinez-Helfman I had so much fun when the students from Hope Partner- ship for Education came to interview me for the first Healthy NewsWorks book in 2012. Everything that day was new to them— touring the Eagles training facility, eating tilapia and broccoli for lunch, and meeting quarterback Michael Vick. And yet despite the excitement, each student brought seriousness to the task. They were earnest and curious, first asking their scripted questions and then letting the conversation unfold new ones. Our time together left my heart more open and raised my hope that these young people were going to enter the world as engaged, prepared, and analytical thinkers and writers. What touched me even more was seeing them again in unexpected moments at Eagles Youth Partnership events. One of the boys came in for an eye exam on Give Kids Sight Day and ran up excitedly to give me a warm hug.
