The sport has many benefits. It is healthy for individuals because it is terrific exercise. It is also healthy for the city because, unlike cars, bikes are environmentally friendly. “Biking is something that a lot of people inherently love,” Mr. Maramangalam says. “It is a way to get outside, and it’s an easy way.” Since the sport can be expensive, especially for athletes who want to compete in races, Cadence relies on donations to help buy bikes for its cyclists. The organization would like to grow so that 300 young people could participate each year. The program is based in schools and recreation centers around Philadelphia. Mr. Maramangalam is grateful that he found a career that allows him to work outdoors. “Every time I go outside I remember how beautiful the world is,” he says. His advice to young people is to discover what matters most to them. “I would say whatever you want to do in life, follow your heart, and make sure your biggest decisions are your own,” he says. “Live passionately, follow your decisions, have fun, and get outside.” — By Healthy Bulletin staff AMY Northwest School 27 Illustration by Maya Matthews, Hancock Healthy Times
