Later in the year we hosted a class from Cole Manor Elementary School, also in the Norristown district. We designed a simulated laboratory environment that included microscopes, microbi- ology culture plates, cells, lab coats, gloves, and even our logistics vehicles that pick up specimens throughout the region. Our professionals shared their passion for laboratory sciences. We hope we stimulated these young reporters to consider science careers in their future because they are our future. We know of at least one student who now plans to become a phlebotomist! Our employees also judged a poster contest. We displayed the artwork that students from 11 area schools submitted demonstrating “Acts of Kindness.” The colorful posters lined our hallway, conveying thoughtfulness and creativity, and provided a welcome break in our day. We are delighted to be part of the Healthy NewsWorks family and to promote health literacy in our community. — By Ilene Rothblat Ms. Rothblat is a Six Sigma Black Belt and QuestCares Coordinator at Quest Diagnostics’ Philadelphia Laboratory. Foreword A message from our Community Wellness Partner QuestCares, which is Quest Diagnostics’ volunteer program, offers our employees an avenue to share their passion for helping our com- munities beyond Quest’s daily pursuit of providing accurate and timely laboratory test results. Along with our company, the Philadelphia laboratory has partnered with Healthy NewsWorks in sup- port of its mission to “empower student journalists to transform the health of their communities.” So far this year, we participated in three events that have inspired us to want to do more. First, employees visited Gotwals Elementary School in the Norristown Area School District and shared with the student reporters the various ways our company helps keep us healthy. This was our first interaction with the students, and it was difficult to tell who had more fun! The experience gave us an opportunity to see the world through their eyes and to share why we, both professionally and personally, think healthy habits are important. We were moved by the health newspaper the third graders produced. 1
