them, to learn about them,” he says. “I am always getting to know people. Great fun.” As he was growing up, Dr. Gottlieb says, he felt that other people didn’t understand him. That feeling of being an outsider became more intense after he was in a terrible car accident when he was a young adult. He lost the use of his legs and almost all ability to move his arms and hands. He has relied on a wheelchair ever since. After the accident, he says, he faced some tough years. He had to work through a lot of his feelings. But he put his life back on track.
