Liz Scott never imagined that so many people would become involved in the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. She and her husband lead the foundation. Their daughter is Alex. Alex struggled with cancer almost all her life and died when she was 8. While Mrs. Scott deeply misses Alex, she says she feels lucky that Alex’s foundation can benefit so many children and families. “It’s amazing,” she says, “. . . to help other people and to see how many other people are helping other people.” The foundation traces its start to when Alex was 4 and wanted to run a lemonade stand. Mrs. Scott remembers asking her, “What can you possibly want with the money you earn?” Alex replied, “I don’t want to keep it. I want to donate it to my hospital.” Liz Scott Continuing Alex’s quest against childhood cancer Mrs. Scott told Alex that she might not raise a lot of money. Alex was not discouraged. She told her mother that she didn’t care how much money she made. Alex felt even a little bit of money can make a difference. But the lemonade sale raised $2,000 for Alex’s hospital. It was a lot more than anyone expected. Since then, the foundation has raised $50 million. The money has helped fund 200 research projects in more than 60 hospitals from Florida to Vermont and California and even Canada. The goal is to find better treatments for childhood cancer. The foundation also helps families who live far from a cancer hospital with their travel expenses so kids get the care they need, says Mrs. Scott. She says the lemonade stands have stayed true to Alex’s vision. They allow kids to help other kids. The stands mean a lot to children with cancer because they feel like they have friends who are helping them, she says. Mrs. Scott says the kids who raise money for the foundation inspire her.
