You don’t need a stethoscope or a doctor’s white jacket to make a community a healthier place. Take Joseph Frick. He is a Philadelphia businessman and a dedicated volunteer. He has made it his mission to help others. As a prominent business leader, he has led campaigns to raise millions of dollars for charities. As a community member, he has walked to raise money for diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and other causes. As a cancer survivor, he has given talks to large groups of people who deal with the disease. “People feel good when they’re doing something for others,” says Mr. Frick. Just being around people who help others inspires him, he says. Mr. Frick started volunteering at a young age with his parents. He cleaned up parks and raised money for needy causes. He learned that “you get back more than you give.” He also believes it is important for businesses to give back to their community. Their em- ployees then will be at their best and the community will thrive. One important way businesses band together is to support United Way. It’s a community group that raises money for charities. The charities help educate children, care for elderly people, train people for jobs, and serve other needs. United Way also organizes ways for people to volunteer. Volunteers participate in such activities as painting schools, assembling fire safety kits, creating an art studio, and providing meals. Mr. Frick served as the chairman of United Way’s campaign in 2010. The campaign raised more than $45 million that year to help the community. Mr. Frick has worked at a number of large companies, including The Philadelphia Inquirer and Independence Blue Cross. Now, he has a top position at Diversified Search.
