“That was the worst thing,” he says. “‘No way,’ I would have said, if you had told me [at age 12] that I would be on TV or speak in front of thousands of people.” He says he “forced” himself to get involved in student government and other activities to build the self-confidence he uses today to be a public figure. He acknowledges that he sometimes still gets nervous before giving a speech. When asked what advice he would give children about people with mental health issues, Dr. Evans says, “Treat people with respect. That means don’t call them derogatory names.
