For many children, the best part of the program is exploring the workout room near Dr. DeRusso’s office. The room has weights, a small trampoline, a boxing bag, tiny and large treadmills, and big and small stationary bikes. The floor mat even has hopscotch courses. The room has mirrors so children can see if they are exercising correctly. In another room, they learn about nutrition. Children can play nutrition games, including one that is similar to “Wheel of Fortune.” The Healthy Weight Program worked with nearly 700 new children and families and received more than 2,800 patient and family visits during 2013. Dr. DeRusso says she and her team also work with other organizations in the community to give exercise classes, to share nutrition information, and to spread the word about healthy lifestyles. Dr. DeRusso’s advice for children is the same that she herself tries to follow every day. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Exercise one hour a day. Don’t eat a lot of sugar. Get enough sleep. —By Malachi Culbreath, Linette Flores, and Alyssa Kirkland Gotwals Healthy Press 5 Illustration by Rebekah Wilford, Norristown Area High School
