27 Amy Goldberg and Scott Charles 2014 Health Leaders Amy Goldberg, M.D., and Scott Charles are the leaders of the Cradle to Grave program at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Goldberg is chair of the Department of Surgery at Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and Mr. Charles is the hospital’s trauma outreach coordinator and director of Cradle to Grave. Dr. Amy Goldberg and Scott Charles are still working to educate young people about the harm that guns can cause. About 12,000 people—mostly between the ages of 13 and 21—have visited their Cradle to Grave program at Temple University Hospital in the 15 years of its existence. The program tells the true story of a Philadelphia boy from his birth until he was shot to death at age 16. “We show the realities of gun violence,” says Dr. Goldberg. The Cradle to Grave program has expanded in the past four years. Some former prisoners now go through the program. “When we bring them into the hospital, they have a greater appreciation of what guns and bullets do to bodies,” says Mr. Charles, who directs the program. He and Dr. Goldberg are also talking to the Philadelphia Police Department. They want to develop a plan that will encourage people to turn in their guns. Many people don’t bring them in because they fear they might be arrested. In 2015, Dr. Goldberg received a big promotion when she became the chair of the Department of Surgery at Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. She is also the surgeon-in-chief for Temple University Health System. Although her new job keeps her very busy, she says she won’t stop fighting gun violence. “There’s still a need for us to educate and make change,” Dr. Goldberg says. “We know we can’t give up the fight. We need all of you, the students, to help us.” — By Gabriela Gonzalez, Balin Lopez, Kayla Price, and Kiany Varela La Salle Academy Healthy News
