5 We’ve designed a simulated laboratory environment for these visits that includes microscopes, micro- biology culture plates, cells, softened pasta noodles (to simulate veins), lab coats, and gloves. The students also learn about our logistics vehicles. Throughout these visits, our professionals have shared their passion for laboratory sciences. We hope we’ve stimulated these young reporters to consider science careers, because they are our future. A number of students leave us promising to come back and work at Quest someday. Of course, sharing a box lunch together and returning them to school with a Quest journal, pen, and backpack is an additional incentive! We are delighted to be part of the Healthy NewsWorks family in promoting health literacy in our community. — By Ilene Rothblat Ms. Rothblat is a senior continuous improvement manager at Quest Diagnostics’ Philadelphia Laboratory. Perspective Bringing science alive to build health awareness Quest Community Action Network (QuestCAN), Quest Diagnostics’ employee volunteer program, offers our employees an avenue to share our passion for helping our communities above and beyond our daily pursuit of providing accurate and timely laboratory test results. We help by taking ACTION. Alongside our company, Quest’s Philadelphia laboratory has partnered locally with Healthy NewsWorks in support of its mission to “empower student journalists to transform the health of their communities.” One of the ways that we support Healthy NewsWorks each year is by hosting students in our laboratory in Horsham, Pa. Students from the Norristown Area School District and Independence Mission Schools in Philadelphia have visited us over the years.
