made her realize that as a doctor she could only help one person at a time, but by working in community health she could help a lot of people at once. With Safe Routes, Ms. Jones works on behalf of cities and communities. She meets with groups of people in neighborhoods and talks to them about what needs fixing. “We ask, ‘What is it that makes it challenging for you to get around?’” says Ms. Jones, who lives in Philadelphia. “Some places don’t have cross- walks, others have crosswalks but no lights, or are full of litter and trash. So we find out what would make it easier to walk and bike.” She helps organizations to contact their local governments about problems she has found and tries to get them fixed. Ms. Jones has also worked with Indego, Philadel- phia’s bike share program, to encourage people to ride bicycles to get healthier. “Those are the bright-blue bikes that are in a dock,” she explains. “You unlock one with a key, ride it around, then put it back in another dock.” Ms. Jones says that because she wanted the program to succeed, she worked as a “community ambassador to neighborhoods and explained that you could [get] a bike with a credit card or cash. We let people know there are classes where they can learn to ride their bikes safely in the city.” Marisa Jones Making it easier for kids to bike and stay healthy Marisa Jones grew up in a home in the country surrounded by woods and farms. She could play for hours outdoors with her two brothers and sister. But she couldn’t go far. It was dangerous to walk on the road outside her house. There were no sidewalks, and cars drove by very fast. Ms. Jones started to understand at a young age that where you live can make a big difference. She is dedicated now to making it easier for kids to walk, bike, jog, and stay healthy. She works for a group called the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. “I joined Safe Routes to School [in 2016] because it had a great reputation and did great work helping people get around safely,” says Ms. Jones, who is the partnership’s healthy communities senior manager. Ms. Jones says that at one time she thought she wanted to be a doctor. “I wanted to become a doctor because I love helping people,” she says. But when she was in college she took a class in community health. The class, Ms. Jones says, 14
