Healthy NewsWorks has expanded its Family Engagement Workshops across Philadelphia, reaching families in six schools and hosting 10 sessions so far during the 2025–2026 school year. The workshops, which began during the 2024–2025 school year, are designed to bring health and media literacy skills beyond the classroom and into homes.
The sessions are led by Healthy NewsWorks staff and held in partnership with schools and community organizations. The workshops give parents and caregivers practical tools to support their children’s health and learning, while also helping families better understand and use health information in everyday life.
The workshops focus on topics that connect directly to students’ experiences, including social media management, emotional well-being, and building healthy habits. Families participate in discussions and activities that encourage them to apply what they learn together. Experts on the topic are available to answer questions.
Ginger Ragland, Manager of New Initiatives at Healthy NewsWorks, said the workshops were created to help families connect more deeply with what students are learning.
“These workshops were inspired by a desire to share with families what students experience in the classroom through Healthy NewsWorks—learning journalism skills while investigating health-related topics with guidance from industry experts. When families are engaged alongside students, the impact is deeper, and together we can build healthier, more informed school communities.”
