Healthy NewsWorks is seeking volunteers with professional editing experience to help our growing program. A background in print or broadcast journalism is a plus!

Volunteer editors engage in varied editing assignments, including supporting Healthy NewsWorks teaching staff, providing input on student stories, and copyediting Healthy NewsWorks publications.

The volunteer schedule is flexible and the role is virtual. Assignments can be project-specific or structured as an ongoing relationship.

Beyond having a strong editing background, volunteers should be motivated to help young people develop their skills as writers and researchers who can ferret out facts and reliable sources.

Volunteer Page Designers

Healthy NewsWorks is seeking volunteers with print publication layout experience or the equivalent to help produce student newspapers. Experience with Canva or similar design software is a plus!

Volunteer page designers create engaging layouts for student newspapers and work closely with Healthy NewsWorks staff to prepare publications for print and digital distribution.

The volunteer schedule is flexible and the role is primarily virtual. Most newspapers are produced between late November and mid-May, with deadlines adjusted to accommodate volunteers’ availability.

Beyond having design and layout experience, volunteers should be excited to showcase student journalism and help bring young reporters’ work to life.

Volunteer Facilitators

Healthy NewsWorks is seeking volunteers with experience in education, health care, journalism or community engagement to lead family engagement workshops throughout the Philadelphia area.

Workshop facilitators use Healthy NewsWorks’ prepared materials to guide interactive sessions on health, wellness, media literacy, communication and school success for parents, caregivers and children.

The volunteer schedule is flexible, with workshops generally held on weekday afternoons and evenings at schools, libraries and community locations. A modest stipend is provided to help cover local travel expenses.

Beyond strong communication and facilitation skills, volunteers should be passionate about creating welcoming learning environments that strengthen family connections and support children’s success.
