Tommy Joshua Caison is founder and executive director of North Philly Peace Park, a garden and gathering place that focuses on youth education and community involvement. Mr. Caison, who grew up not far from Peace Park, became interested in grassroots community organizing when he was a teenager. As he began to pursue higher education, he was diagnosed with leukemia. That difficulty changed his life and set him on a path toward community work. After working in the Philadelphia public schools, he started the Peace Park as a way to counter blight, violence, food insecurity, and other problems in the community. Ryan Coffman, M.P.H., is manager of the Tobacco Policy and Control Program for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. He oversees several initiatives to prevent youth smoking, promote tobacco-free environments, and develop tobacco policies. He also provides tobacco treatment services at the City of Philadelphia’s Health Center 2 in South Philadelphia. Mr. Coffman became committed to tobacco control in 2003 while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya. He earned a master of public health degree at Tulane University and has certifications in health education, tobacco-use disorder treatment, and global tobacco control. Elizabeth Datner, M.D., is chair of emergency medicine for Einstein Healthcare Network. She is based at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and also oversees the emergency departments at Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park and Einstein Medical Center Montgomery. Previously, she worked at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dr. Datner earned her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She did an internship in internal medicine at George Washington University and a residency in emergency medicine at George Washington/Georgetown Universities Emergency Medicine Training Program. Lori M. Hayes has been director of urban forestry for the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation department since 2017. She began working for the city in 1981 as a ground maintenance worker in Fairmount Park and has served in a variety of roles, including landscape project technician, park district manager, and north regional manager. She also oversees the city’s TreePhilly Program, which gives trees to residents for planting. Ms. Hayes earned a degree in horticulture from Temple University and is a graduate of the Municipal Forestry Institute, a program of the Society of Municipal Arborists. She holds a number of professional designations and certifications, including as an arborist, master gardener, and certified pesticide applicator.
