Greener Partners is part of a movement called “Food as Medicine.” It operates gardens at Lankenau Medical Center and at Einstein Medi- cal Center Montgomery’s Karabots Medical Build- ing, with the idea that growing and eating healthy fruits and vegetables is a key to staying healthy. Every year thousands of school students go on field trips to the Lankenau garden to experience how food is grown and harvested. Greener Partners also distributes free fruits and vegetables to patients. “We love giving people fresh fruits and vegetables when they are at their doctor’s appointment,” she says. In addition to the medicine or other treatment patients get from their doctor, “fresh food is part of their plan to get better.” “When people are in a hospital or a doctor’s office, they are open to change. We are meeting people when they are open to eating healthier and I think we can have a really big impact,” she says. Ms. MacCurtin tells kids to experiment with different foods rather than eating the same things day after day. “Keep an open mind to trying fruits and vegeta- bles. Always have that curiosity,” she says. If you don’t like something on first taste, “try it again. ... Just keep trying. Eventually you might just love it.” —By Healthy Comet staff Cole Manor Elementary School 17 Illustrations by Sabri Brown, fourth grade, La Salle Academy Healthy News Tips on gardening • Start simple and small. Consider using containers to grow a garden. • Have a plan. Will your garden be indoors or outdoors? • Find out what your plants will need. Plenty of light? Shade? How much space? How much water? • Think about what you want to eat. That might motivate you to grow it. Source: Meg MacCurtin
