Before joining Audubon Pennsylvania, Mr. Russell worked for the Academy of Natural Sciences, now affiliated with Drexel University. While there, he contributed to the publication The Birds of North America, which took 11 years to complete. “It was a great experience because I met experts on birds from throughout the United States and Canada,” he says. He says his shy nature was suited to the quiet work he did at the Academy. When he joined Audubon, his job required him to speak in front of groups— something he had not needed to do before. At first, he says, it was difficult. But he discovered that “being prepared helps overcome shyness.” Mr. Russell encourages young people to seek out mentors or teachers who can offer support and encouragement. “Don’t be too critical of yourself,” he says. “Focus on the positive.” Mr. Russell, who says he finds his inspiration and strength in God, urges young people to pursue their interests. That can lead to discovering a talent and even to finding a career. — Layoni Baldwin, Kamaiyah Brady, Kenya Cook, Jalile Crooks, and Mekhi Jones St. Martin de Porres Healthy Saint 23 Illustration by Kamaiyah Brady, eighth grade, St. Martin de Porres Healthy Saint
