Caring for Our Community and Ourselves

Connecting Where We Live and Learn to Our Health

Our reporters have explored how their schools and neighborhoods play an important role in people’s mental and physical health. Topics include kindness, empathy, and service to others. Please ask your students to view our reporters’ videos and read their Spring 2024 Magazine and Fall 2024 Magazine. Use the activities below to help your students think about ways to make positive contributions in our communities. They also can contribute a reflection to our By Kids, For Kids page.

Activities to Use in Your Classroom

Murals

The DePaul Catholic School has a mural that honors the history of the school, its values, and the community. Design your own mural that represents your school or community.

Sustainability

You can help preserve the environment. Take  a sustainability walk around your school or home and create a list of things you’re already doing or could do to protect the environment.

Litter

Think about where you spot litter in your life. Describe where you see it and how it makes you feel. Write about what you can do to address the problem.

Hydroponics

A hydroponic garden system allows people to grow food in small spaces. Create a plan that shows where you could set up a hydroponic garden in your school, your classroom, or even your home.

Philanthropy

Dr. Keith Leaphart talks about what it means to be a philanthropist and encourages people to be a philanthropist in their own ways. Create a list of ideas of how students could be philanthropists. How can students help those in need?

Kindness

Watch and listen to the poem “Kindness Lives Here.” Write your own poem about kindness. A grownup can help you submit your poem to Healthy NewsWorks: editor@HealthyNewsWorks.org.

Vaccines

Dr. Kristen Feemster explains that vaccines can protect you and your community against infections. Create a public service announcement with a simple message about the importance of vaccines and one action you can take.

Future careers

As a child, Arlene Notoro Morgan constantly asked questions and played “newspaper reporter” with a friend. She eventually became a journalist. Write a reflection about some things you’re interested in and future careers that could relate to them.
