Second-grade student reporters at MaST Community Charter School have published the first junior edition of the Healthy Panther Post, a special newspaper focused on nutrition and healthy habits.
The Spring 2026 issue features articles, book reviews, and illustrations created by students. For the past three years, seventh graders participating in the school’s student journalism program have produced the Healthy Panther Post. Now their younger schoolmates are getting the chance to try their hand at the project.

In their debut publication, the second-grade journalists wrote about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, how trying new foods can support healthy habits, and tips from nutrition experts on making smart choices, such as selecting water and milk as healthy beverages.
“Launching the junior edition gives our youngest students a chance to build confidence as writers while learning about healthy habits in a fun, engaging way,” said Eve Smith, program associate at Healthy NewsWorks. “It’s exciting to see them take ownership of their ideas and share them with their community.”
In addition to reported stories, the publication includes book reviews by students. They chose books such as “The Fruits We Eat” and “Chicks and Salsa,” about cooking and the benefits of diets rich in fruits and vegetables. The issue also features original student artwork and reflections on favorite foods and healthy habits.
Copies of the Healthy Panther Post Junior Edition are being shared within the MaST Community Charter School community. A digital version of the newspaper is available on the Healthy NewsWorks website.
