Felicia Carter, a civil rights attorney who works for the city of Philadelphia, will be spending the next year as a non-voting member on the Healthy NewsWorks Board of Directors.
Felicia said she hopes to use her legal skills to make a difference and looks forward to expanding her involvement in youth-focused initiatives. She said the Philadelphia Bar Foundation’s Board Observer Program offers a unique opportunity to see the operational side of a nonprofit in action.
In her role as a board observer, Felicia will attend meetings and learn how a nonprofit operates. She will provide her knowledge and insight to help support Healthy NewsWorks’ mission of empowering students to research, write, and report on health topics that matter to their communities.
“I’ve worked for other nonprofits before but never learned about the operational tasks involved in managing one.” Felicia said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity through the Board Observer Program to see a new perspective on how nonprofits operate.”
Felicia serves as an assistant city solicitor in the civil rights unit of the Philadelphia Law Department, where she works to uphold the rights of city residents. She has also worked with nonprofits focused on economic development and community initiatives, experiences that shaped her understanding of how legal skills can advance mission-driven work.
Outside of her legal work, Felicia enjoys reading, watching the Phillies, and searching for the best ice cream in the city.
“Felicia’s commitment to community involvement makes her a wonderful addition to our Board,” said Marian Uhlman, Healthy NewsWorks executive director. “We are excited to welcome her perspective and look forward to the insight and energy she will bring to our work supporting young journalists.”
Healthy NewsWorks has been involved in the Board Observer Program since 2019.
