New videos help build teacher skills
February 24, 2025

Healthy NewsWorks recently launched a four-part video series of teacher skill-building lessons on elements of writing and editing news articles. The videos are about five minutes each and are designed to help build skills in teaching four critical areas of journalism: writing a lead, writing contextual paragraphs, sourcing information, and editing.

The teacher lessons have been in development since last summer and include short presentations featuring Healthy NewsWorks program associate Ginger Ragland.

“Journalistic writing is different from the style of writing that we teach students to write on the daily basis,” said Healthy NewsWorks program associate Eve Smith, who developed corresponding activities for teachers to practice skills highlighted in the videos. “It’s great to know the differences and bridges the gap between writing and Healthy NewsWorks articles.  My hope is that these videos are helpful so that they can apply this to their writing with students.”

“We hope that these teacher lessons provide an accessible resource for our partner teachers about fact-based writing,” said Healthy NewsWorks Executive Director Marian Uhlman.

Watch the teacher lessons here. Healthy NewsWorks also invites feedback on any of the activities as we continue to develop more journalism resources for our teachers. Share feedback with Eve Smith (esmith@healthynewsworks.org).
