One of Healthy NewsWorksโ former reporters has made his way to primetime!
Dean Millard, a former Healthy NewsWorks reporter, recently worked as a runner for ABC News, assisting with production for the Sept. 10 presidential debate in Philadelphia. โOne of my favorite tasks was being a stand-in for an ABC News anchor on set in front of the National Constitution Center,โ he said of his debate prep work. โThis experience was an excellent balance between my interests in politics and news.โย
As a Healthy NewsWorks reporter, Dean found a love for interviewing people. In 2017, as he graduated from the program and moved on to high school, he told Healthy NewsWorks he was already looking toward a career in journalism.
He currently is a senior at Villanova University, where he studies political science and communications and serves as student body president. He is also a peer tutor at the Villanova Writing Center and a junior White House Correspondent for AKSM Media. He plans to attend law school and pursue a career in politics, journalism, or broadcasting.
Dean participated in Healthy NewsWorks programs in the Norristown Area School District from 2010 to 2017, beginning when he was in the second grade. He wrote for the Cole Manor Healthy Comet and the East Norriton Bulldog Bulletin, and was published in the Leading Healthy Change In Our Communities book series. He interviewed many influential health leaders during his seven years in the program.ย
As part of our ongoing Building a Healthy Future campaign, Dean told us that he felt the skills he developed as a Healthy NewsWorks reporter were a major asset as he progressed in his studies. โDuring high school and my first few years of college, I was constantly reminded of my advanced writing ability by teachers and professors,โ he said. โThis is a testament to the Healthy NewsWorks program, which helped to build my foundational writing skills.โย
Healthy NewsWorks is so proud of Dean, and we canโt wait to see what he will accomplish next!
