School newsrooms are gearing up
September 20, 2024

A return to school means that Healthy NewsWorks also is back in the classroom.ย

Our staff members have started โ€œboot campโ€ for our main newspaper reporters in Philadelphia, Camden, Norristownโ€”and in our first-ever program in the City of Chester.

Healthy NewsWorks boot camp features six lessons that teach journalism basics, including interviewing and research skills, after which participants complete their first article. Our Core reporters comprise the staff of their school newspaper, and can contribute to Healthy NewsWorks magazines and videos as well. They work on their school newspaper for either the school year or for a semester.

We expect a dozen school programs will have launched their Core Reporter program by the end of September, and at least eight more school newspaper teams will be gearing up in the coming weeks.ย

To further broaden our impact, we are attending staff meetings in our participating schools, where we discuss how teachers can use their newspaper for literacy enrichment in their classroom. We also invite teachers to sign up for our Cub Reporter program for students in kindergarten to third grade, or for a Special Lesson with a Healthy NewsWorks staff member. We seek to engage as many students as possible in their school health journalism program.

ย If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about what Healthy NewsWorks offers, please contact Mia Blitstein, Healthy NewsWorks program manager, atย mblistein@HealthyNewsWorks.org.
