As we head into the beginning of the school year, weโre also preparing for our new Core Reporters! Each Healthy NewsWorks reporter receives a kit with all the basics theyโll need, and this summer, a team of volunteers helped us put the materials together.
Five Philadelphia-area teens assembled kits for an anticipated 550 students in Healthy NewsWorksโ Core Reporter program during the 2024-25 school year.
Led by Judah Blitstein, son of Program Manager Mia Blitstein, the teenagers worked together for four hours this summer to stuff and label pouches with what Core Reporters need to get started on their journalism journey: Healthy NewsWorksโs unique research and writing cards and a guide to reporting called the Inside Scoop. They also will receive a copy of the fall edition of By Kids, For Kids magazine produced by Healthy NewsWorks student reporters, a school health newspaper, and, of course, a pencil.
The Core Reporter program is one of three programs that Healthy NewsWorks offers schools.
It includes a series of up to 24 lessons that develop studentsโ interviewing, writing, reporting, and research skills. Students create and publish school-based health newspapers and digital media on topics relevant to their peers and communities.
Our 2024โ25 theme is โMaking Good Decisions.โ Students will report about and reflect on topics such as getting enough sleep, dealing with peer pressure, and coping with challenging situations. They also can contribute to Healthy NewsWorksโ videos and print and e-magazine.
