New drugs are expected to extend many patients’ lives for decades. However, Ms. Kramer-Golinkoff has a rare form of the disease, and the new drugs will not help her. She and her family decided they had two options: They could do nothing and be upset, or they could do something to push forward. That’s why they started Emily’s Entourage. Since 2011, Emily’s Entourage has built a strong following on social media and raised more than $2 million. The organization gives the money to sci- entists all over the world to speed up cystic fibrosis research and encourage more collaboration and innovative thinking. Ms. Kramer-Golinkoff also speaks to groups about the disease. In the summer of 2015, the White House honored Ms. Kramer-Golinkoff as a Champion of Change for Precision Medicine for making a difference in medical treatment. “If you told me four years ago that I was going to get an award from the White House, I wouldn’t have believed you,” she says. Emily‘s Entourage shows how powerful people can be when they band together. “It’s easy to get caught up in all the terrible things in the world,” she says. “But you really need to focus on the good things in life and believe in your power to make a difference.” She says you should “listen to your heart, follow your dreams, and if you want to change something in the world, go for it boldly.” — By Sophia Collazo, Jayla Clark, and Angelos Farabello James Dobson Fit Fin 23 Illustration by Isa Ayers, St. Martin de Porres Healthy Saint
