They inspected res- taurants and mobile food carts for food safety, coordinated medical volunteers to work in first-aid tents, sprayed against mosquitoes, monitored air safety, and developed an emergency plan in case of major problems. On a day-to-day basis, Dr. Buehler had respon- sibility for a wide range of health programs, from anti-smoking efforts to the city’s eight health centers. People visit health centers for checkups, vaccinations, dental work, health education, and other basic medical care. Dr. Buehler was also responsible for the city’s childhood lead poisoning prevention program. Lead poisoning can cause lifelong brain damage. It can occur in old homes with lead paint. If the paint cracks and crumbles, young children can be poisoned if they touch it and then put their fingers in their mouth. How does Dr. Buehler stay healthy? It’s not always easy because of his busy schedule. So he “builds activity” into his day and walks more. For example, instead of taking the elevator at work, he uses the stairs. Children can do that too, he says. They should be active and spend less time on electronic devices. They should eat healthy foods and drink less soda because it has too much sugar in it. They should “watch where they are going and use common sense.” These, too, are important public health messages. — By Samantha Knox Johnson, Markera Little, Imani Butler, Skye Debman, and Ke’Shawnda Hines St. Martin de Porres Healthy Saint 11 Illustration by Zamirah Wheeler, St. Martin de Porres Healthy Saint
