As a community partner, we look for opportunities to expose students to new experiences in health- care and to share our resources. In this way, they learn about a variety of health-related careers and gain experience writing about what they have encountered. Whether participating in a field trip to see the workings of the Emergency Department at one of our medical centers or learning about dental hygiene from dental residents who visit their schools, the students gain knowledge first-hand from professionals in the field. Our hope is that our medical experts will serve as role models and spark an interest and desire to pursue a career in medicine or in the allied health professions. I like to think that some of the students in the program today will become the next generation of doctors, nurses, or other medical professionals. — By Douglas McGee, D.O. Dr. McGee is chief academic officer for Einstein Healthcare Network. Foreword A message from our Community Healthcare Champion This year, Einstein Healthcare Network celebrates 150 years of service to the Philadelphia community, and during this special anniversary year, we are delighted to continue our support of Healthy NewsWorks as a Community Healthcare Champion. Going back to 1952, when Albert Einstein Medical Center was founded, following the merger of the Jewish Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Northern Liberties Hospital, the organization has been “devoted to medical teaching, medical research, and community health activity.” Since then, Albert Einstein Medical Center has evolved into Einstein Healthcare Network, home of the largest independent academic medical center in the region, and has maintained its commitment to teaching and community health. This aligns perfectly with the mission and vision of Healthy NewsWorks. 1
