By documenting the importance of physical activ- ity, diet, and prevention and detection of diseases, the journalists have become empowered to com- municate their knowledge of health issues to the broader community. As an educator, I am inspired by our student journalists who use their voices to teach and transform future generations on health issues and to deliver insights that may not only improve but save lives. I am impressed that students have learned that through their research and advocacy they are able to broaden awareness and facilitate change. Insight An educator’s perspective on Healthy NewsWorks Healthy NewsWorks is an incredible vehicle that enables students to exam- ine and explore the health and social issues that are transforming the 21st century. The authentic manner in which issues are discov- ered, examined, and debated spurs students to be agents of change in the environment in which they live and go to school. The uniquely crafted interviews and comprehensive research enable students to delve into areas that encourage questioning and challenge thinking. The student journalists who have grown through their experiences with Healthy NewsWorks have become ambassadors for wellness and healthy living. 3
