By Antonio, East Norriton Bulldog Bulletin reporter | You may like to play video games, but some experts say they could be bad for you.
KidsHealth.org advises that too much of anything can have unhealthy side effects, and the American Psychological Association warns against video games that promote violence.
For example, some video games can be violent, such as Mortal Kombat, Assassin’s Creed, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Far Cry. But other games, such as Just Dance and Nintendo Switch Sports, may help you get exercise because you have to move to play.
According to the American Psychological Association Task Force Report on Violent Video Games (2019), there’s evidence that playing violent video games can lead to aggressive behaviors, both in laboratory settings and in actual life. Public health and safety could be affected as a result.
“Violence causes trauma and stress, and some noticeable things are that the person is angrier, doesn’t want to be around people, and is more likely to solve problems with violence,” said East Norriton school nurse Mrs. Zangara.
Mrs. Divirgilio, a computer science teacher, said, “Kids that had more exposure to violence would think that it is OK and their response will be quick and emotional.”
KidsHealth.org, however, points out that playing video games sometimes can be OK. There are games that are fun and E-rated, meaning they are appropriate for everyone. Those include Minecraft, Mario Bros., Animal Crossing, Rocket League, and Farming Simulator. And, the website says, those games can improve your hand-eye coordination.
KidsHealth.org has two important tips for developing healthy media habits: Check the ratings of the game, and limit screen time.
