Make daily exercise fun
September 22, 2025

By Catholic Partnership Schools Healthy Courier reporters | Juni Bolaños is a part-time Zumba instructor and full-time flight attendant who encourages students to find an exercise they enjoy and make it part of their daily routine. He spoke about staying active and making meaningful connections to Catholic Partnership Schools’ sixth to eighth graders during their summer program with Healthy NewsWorks.

Why is it important for kids to get aerobic exercise?

Mr. Bolaños: If kids make getting the proper amount of aerobic exercise a part of their daily routine, it will help you out in the long run. Chances are you will be healthy as you enter adulthood.

What happens if kids do not get enough aerobic exercise?

Mr. Bolaños: Most times when people think of exercise, they think of physical health. But getting the proper amount of aerobic exercise is also important for your mental health.  When you are physically fit, you feel better about yourself, and you are more likely not to suffer from health problems.

What are some popular ways to get physical exercise?

Mr. Bolaños: Dancing/Zumba is a great way to get the body moving. Making the most of the time you have in gym class and recess is another way to get in physical exercise.

What are some other ways that kids can get aerobic exercise that are not as well known?

Mr. Bolaños: We often think that when you exercise, it is something that you do alone.  But aerobic exercise can be fun when you include your family and friends. It can take place in the playground or park. Just think about an activity that you really enjoy doing and gets you moving. And include your family and friends.

What advice would you give to kids who are trying to exercise more?

Mr. Bolaños: Find an aerobic exercise that you really enjoy doing. Try to make it a part of your daily routine. Keep at it until it becomes a healthy habit.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Mr. Bolaños: Remember, aerobic exercise affects your mental health as well as your physical health.  And when you feel good about you, you will do better in all aspects of your life.

How long have you been teaching Zumba?

Mr. Bolaños: I have been teaching Zumba going on 14 years now.

What/who influenced you to start teaching Zumba?

Mr. Bolaños: I used to work at a bank and a friend of mine introduced me to Zumba.  Before you know it, I was hooked. I went from being in the back of class to being up front leading and teaching classes. Zumba really brought me out of my comfort zone and helped me to be more confident. It feels good to know that through Zumba I am helping people lead active and healthy lives.
