By Catholic Partnership Schools Healthy Courier reporters | John Chino Ramos, a professional social worker turned fitness coach, shared his insights about the importance of aerobic exercise with Catholic Partnership Schools’ Healthy Courier reporters during the schools’ summer program.

Chino Ramos leads high-energy cycle and strength classes at Life Time. He uses fitness as a platform to empower others, sharing his Latino heritage, story, and passion for living a healthy lifestyle.

Why is it important for kids to get aerobic exercise?

Mr. Chino Ramos: To live a long and healthy life, kids should get aerobic exercise at an early age.  The more aerobic exercise you get, the better your chances are of being good at activities that you enjoy doing. But most importantly, you are developing habits that will help you lead a more fulfilling life.

What happens if kids do not get enough aerobic exercise?

Mr. Chino Ramos: Just because you are a kid doesn’t mean you do not need to exercise. Not enough aerobic exercise can lead to medical conditions as you get older. That is why it is important to get into the habit of establishing a daily routine where you get some kind of exercise every day.

What are some popular ways to get aerobic exercise?

Mr. Chino Ramos: There are many ways, and it can be fun. Walking is probably the easiest and most popular way. But just playing outside with your friends is a good way to get aerobic exercise. Riding your bike, playing in the park, and breathing in fresh air are all good for your health.

What are some other ways kids can get aerobic exercise that are not as well known?

Mr. Chino Ramos: The most important thing is to not overthink your approach to aerobic exercise. It is important to make it fun. It is something you can do with your entire family and friends. Make sure you find an aerobic activity that you really enjoy. The important thing is to get moving and have lots of fun in the process.

What advice would you give kids who are trying to exercise more?

Mr. Chino Ramos: I would recommend that they do not make it complicated. Find an activity that you enjoy and have fun.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Mr. Chino Ramos: When a lot of people begin an exercise program, they tend to focus on the long term. Focusing on the long term is important, but it is also important to stay present, be patient with yourself, and most importantly have fun.

What is your favorite aerobic exercise?

Mr. Chino Ramos: My favorite aerobic exercise would have to be indoor cycling. You get to hear great music and be in a room of people all sharing a positive vibe.

Who influenced you to become a fitness instructor?

Mr. Chino Ramos: A former personal trainer influenced me to become a fitness instructor. He really believed in me and helped me to push myself beyond my comfort zone. He also taught me that while exercise is indeed important it can also be fun.
