Thirsty? Reach for a water bottle
May 9, 2025

By Adaire Fit Fish Reporters | The best drink to quench your thirst is water, said Ms. Kimberly Beall’s first-grade cub reporters after researching the importance of drinking water.

According to the book Drinking Water by Mari Schuh and Gail Saunders-Smith, most of your body is made of water, so it’s important to drink water and stay hydrated, said cub reporters.

“You should drink a lot of water every day,” said Dylan Rhodes, a reporter with Adaire’s Fit Fish. And “you should drink more if you’re sick or playing sport,” said Iris-Marie Nassar.

In their research, students drank water, and when asked how it made them feel, Lydia Graves, Om Anand, and Sol BaillyCho said it cooled them down. RJ Inacker and Reese Dicken said it made them feel energized.

According to the website KidsHealth.org, when you don’t drink enough it can be dangerous. This is called dehydration. If you’re dehydrated, your pee may be very yellow, you may have dry lips or dry mouth, or you may feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired.

Sometimes kids don’t drink enough water because they find drinking water boring. But drinking water isn’t the only place to get water. You can also get it when you eat foods like fruit, said Oliver Lee, or soup, added Elle Calarco.

Kids may also drink less water because they like sugary drinks like soda or energy drinks more. Make water less boring by adding cucumber, lemon, or mint, suggested Lathiya Dalziel and other cub reporters.

Kids should not be drinking energy drinks, say doctors at KidHealth.org. “Many of the ingredients have not been studied in kids and could be harmful,” according to the website.

That’s why reporter Jones Calarco said the next time he plays basketball “I’m drinking water—not energy drinks—because water is the best drink to stay hydrated.”
