By James Lowell Healthy Lion reporters | โTake care of your body because you only have one,โ said Lowell Elementary School Nurse Katie Koryat.
In interviews with Healthy Lion reporters, Nurse Katie, Dr. Chorneiko (Dr. C, student-based teacher leader), and Ms. Martin, fourth-grade teacher, said they stay active by exercising.
The American Heart Association says people need an hour or more of exercise every day to help their hearts stay healthy and strong and to do their job. The association says exercise should be โmoderateโ or โvigorous.โ
Sweating is one way you know whether you are getting a moderate or vigorous workout, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Martin is following the recommendations of health experts. She goes to a yoga center and practices yoga three times a week. She also walks for an hour or two every week around her neighborhood, she said.
Dr. C lifts lightweights three times a week along with biking and walking outside when the weather is nice. Nurse Katie swims three times a week at the gym. She also walks her dog every day.
All three staff members say they exercise because it feels good for their bodies, keeps them healthy, gives them energy, and because they enjoy it. They say exercise also calms them.
The American Heart Association says aerobic activities such as running, swimming and biking make you breathe faster and increases your heart rate. This helps you healthier and strengthens your heart.
All the staff members recommend that kids do more exercise. Dr. C said, โThere is a lot of research about how training can reduce stress and anxiety.โ Ms. Martin said keeping your body healthy is good for your heart and soul. Remember, health is always the key.
