It’s OK to go online—with limits

Some kids might get upset about having a limit on their screen time, but it is necessary.

East Norriton Middle School nurse Mrs. Zangara said, “Screen time overstimulates your brain and makes it hard for the brain to think.”

Mrs. Zangara recommends that, except for school work, students should spend no more than 30 minutes a day on screens, watching shows, or on social media.

Why is this necessary? According to the National Library of Medicine, too much screen time can have many negative effects. Experts say being online for too long can lead to difficulty sleeping at night, attention problems, and/or possible depression. A lack of movement can also lead to health issues like obesity.

Limiting screen time isn’t just an idea for kids.

“I think we all, including adults, need to set parameters as to how much time online is healthy for our brains,” said Mr. Toner, a sixth-grade science teacher.

So the next time you’re planning to check TikTok or play Roblox, try to limit the amount of time you spend online.
