The “icing on the cake” was having one of the students present me with a picture she drew of me standing next to a patient using the ReWalk™ technology that helps patients with paraplegia walk again. Healthy NewsWorks is a one-of-a-kind program that offers students a unique opportunity to gain practical, lifelong skills such as how to prepare to interview someone and how to write and edit effectively. By exposing students to topics in science and health, the program can open doors to a career in healthcare, science, education, technology, engineering—and the list goes on! There is no doubt that Healthy NewsWorks enhances the lives of many young people. May it continue to thrive for years to come. — By Alberto Esquenazi, M.D. Dr. Esquenazi is chief medical officer of MossRehab, part of Einstein Healthcare Network, which is Healthy NewsWorks’ Community Healthcare Champion. He was recognized as a health leader in Leading Healthy Change In Our Communities 2016. Foreword A unique opportunity to gain lifelong skills Last year I had the privilege of meeting a group of students from East Norriton Middle School who interviewed me for an article that was published in the Leading Healthy Change in Our Communities 2016 book as well as for their school newspaper. What I encountered were students who were enthusiastic, extremely inquisitive, and well- prepared. They asked intelligent, probing questions that helped them understand my day-to-day re- sponsibilities as a physiatrist (a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor) who works with patients and families at MossRehab. It was apparent that the group was committed to the project, and what materialized was an article that clearly and concisely conveyed highlights of my background and approach to patient care. 1
